I attended a panel interview and networking event for the Social Media Club of Chicago to learn more about how social media is fast becoming an integral part of every day life - from your personal life to your business life. Just think how swiftly we can communicate and exchange ideas with each other through those little mediums called Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to name a few.
What was so cool for me was that through one of these vehicles, Twitter to be precise, I met some folks who are quickly becoming some of my favorites. And they are certainly significant leaders in helping young professionals and entrepreneurs. Their Twitter names are @bradleywill, @billcrosby, and @briantomkins. A few exchanges, 140 characters at a time, and some great mind-melding later at the event just reinforced for me the power of what sharing ideas with others can do for you.
That night I made a commitment to reach out to at least 10 new people a day. There will be no excuse for me not to try and get to know someone new and learn something. My challenge to you right now is to grab a piece of paper, iPhone, Blackberry, napkin, whatever, and write down the names of five people that you will get to know better. Someone you work with, someone you see as a potential mentor to you or a peer you know who can be supportive. Next to their names write down the most important thing you think you can offer them. And then give yourself 7 days to accomplish the task.
These exchanges can be casual, formal, 15 minutes or 3 hours. The objective is to learn something new about an individual, gain a perspective different from your own and to offer something of yourself in return.
Feel free to share any totally amazing experiences or great advice you learn and want to pass along to others. I look forward to hearing them. SEVEN DAYS!
Before I go, I wanted to share with you an amazing experience I had right after the social media event in the video below.
